Isn't that what I just said?
Comparing our situation to what Socrates said...I consider you to be the happy swine whereas I'm the unhappy human (although I'm not saying I'm perfect, if that's what this sounds like).

I think you should re-read Socrates. Socrates, like Aristotle, believed man was at his most human when he was at his most rational. Socrates believed, as I believe, that the unexamined life was not worth living. He believed that when you truly become a man you will gain the perspective of the temporality of your life, and will come to see that most of the pursuits people care about are meaningless; especially quests for social status and money.
I'm no expert, but Socrates would probably have said that you live your life as an intellectual coward, without the desire or the honesty to confront contradictions in your beliefs. He would have held that to be profoundly against his vision of human nature.
Most of Socrates contemporaries criticized him for, amongst other things, being like a robot, not caring about socialization and lacking common sense. I've lived most of my life holding Socrates as a model.
Feel free, however, to continue with the thesis that people who are born autistic don't count as being humans. Luckily, the only people you're offending with that bigotry are too self-assured to take it to heart. |

you missed exchange about robots....
And you have more than as many friends as you would need.
not that that minor fix improves the general confusion caused by that sentence all too much |

| You said all of your best friends are autistic. Coupled with your general misanthropy towards people in general that demonstrates a very "me against the world" attitude, it just means you can center your perspective around a group you belong to instead of just you. |

All of my best friends but one, my brother. My brother might also be autistic, but his mind is too radically different and more powerful for an effective diagnosis. For instance, when we were given the chalk test, I answered the wrong way (hence my diagnosis) and my brother said "This is the chalk test for autism, 1988, there are two possible answers..."
My brother is much smarter than I; with no training whatsoever he is able to grasp what I consider the most difficult and obscure elements of metaphysics of modality. What I can do, as (and I hope this doesn't sound arrogant) probably the best logician of my generation, he can do without any study. He has a staggering command of everything he reads, and he reads constantly.
To answer your question then, I am almost entirely self-sufficient. Almost. I would be lonely if I didn't have another person, for at least two periods in my life. I do.
If my brother was my only friend (which he is not) I would not be lonely. That's the answer to your question. |

I don't know what this implies.
| Quote: | | He has a staggering command of everything he reads, and he reads constantly. |
Do you mean memory? I don't understand the significance.
| Quote: | | I would be lonely if I didn't have another person, for at least two periods in my life. I do. |
Could you elaborate on this?
| Quote: | | If my brother was my only friend (which he is not) I would not be lonely. That's the answer to your question. |
Is this based on the possibility he's different than you, or is something else unique about this relationship that gives it such importance? |

more than as many friends as I would need
the "would need". would need for what/when?
and the "more than as many friends". I dont know what is wrong with this, but it just "feels wrong" to me, but I dont actually know what I dont like about it though. |

Yes.

Sure. I'd like someone to make Godfather to my son. I'd also like someone to be with me when I'm dying.

Well if only a small number of people can do whatever it is you do, it makes it much harder to judge the difficulty of he subject, doesn't it?

This alone makes the relationship unique above all others? |

No. Why would it? Just because a very small number of people can play black with competence in the Sveshnikov doesn't entail that we don't know how hard it is.
